AMMAN - Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit on Wednesday inaugurated the Shmeisani intersection, a multimillion dinar project that will facilitate traffic flow in the busiest districts of the capital.

During the inauguration ceremony yesterday, the premier was briefed on the project and the intersection layout by Ammar Gharaybeh, chairman of the Greater Amman Municipality committee.

Linking Shmeisani with Abdali, and Zahran with the Basman area, the intersection will contribute to solving traffic problems in central Amman, according to the GAM press centre.

The JD19 million project was implemented in 630 days, according to the centre.

The intersection is a landmark in Amman, Gharaybeh said, noting that it will provide a solution for one of the major traffic congestion spots in the capital.

"The project reflects one of GAM's main achievements and will remain a quantum leap in the municipality's services to the citizens and the visitors of Amman," he added.

The new intersection will link Queen Noor Street with Nabulsi and Ali Ben Abi Taleb streets, according to the press centre.

With a new tunnel to serve motorists heading to the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the renovation of the underground pass that links the Interior Ministry Circle with the Third Circle, the intersection will reduce daily traffic jams between the two circles, the press centre added.

In addition, the project includes a 360-metre overpass for cars heading to Shmeisani, and 370-metre flyover to serve traffic between the Fourth Circle and Interior Ministry Circle, according to GAM.

As part of the project the municipality built a new circle under the flyovers to avoid congestion and distribute traffic in a safe and manageable manner, and focused on expanding the capacity of roads and streets in the intersection, according to the press centre.
